Tyler and Katelyn's Oval Engagement Ring

The Bespoke Journey

From Wedding Band to Engagement Ring

Working with professional jewelers means that sometimes we create the perfect ring in an unexpected way, like turning a wedding band our client fell in love with into her engagement ring!

Stackable, vintage, and classic all in one

Phase 01

Ideation & Inspiration

Katelyn and Tyler began the engagement shopping process together. She had gathered inspiration from Pinterest and knew she wanted an oval on an an accented band, but wanted to see rings in person before Tyler committed to one. She tried on many rings she thought she would like and hadn't found anything that felt like "the one."

That is, until our associate Mandy had an idea to start playing with our more extensive collection of stackable wedding bands to get some ideas of what style band Katelyn preferred. She found one that spoke to her: a vintage-inspired alternating stone band with milgrain edges.

Phase 02

Technical Engineering

Mandy discreetly followed up with Tyler to find out when he wanted to propose and he was ready to get started! Once he had picked the perfect stone from a curated selection, Mandy got to work on the setting. There were a few ways we could have approached creating this ring, including finding a similar existing setting or starting with a custom CAD. Since Katelyn loved the band we had in stock, we decided to modify that exact ring!

DID YOU KNOW? Resets and reworks aren't just for pre-loved jewelry! Our in-house jewelers can combine, transform, and alter jewelry from our cases too. Sometimes the perfect piece just needs a little tweaking! Other times, this allows us to work with tight deadlines by repurposing in-stock jewelry.

To adapt the ring for the oval diamond Tyler chose, our jewelers begin by cutting out a section of the wedding band to make room for the head of the ring where the prongs will hold the stone in place. The prefabricated head is torch soldered onto the band by our experts. Using this technique, gold solder melts and bonds for maximum durability. The last step is setting the stone and polishing the ring for proposal!

Phase 03

The Finished Product

Once the ring was finished up, Tyler presented it to Katelyn with a surprise proposal. In Tyler's own words:

"I stepped into Herzog with an idea in mind of what I wanted to buy to propose to my girlfriend at the time, but I was completely clueless on how to buy any jewelry, especially a ring of this caliber. Luckily for me, Mandy was there that day and immediately got to work on helping us understand our options. She listened diligently to what my girlfriend said she liked as we browsed that day. She discretely contacted me the next day and had me come back in to further discuss. Together, she and I built the custom ring of my girlfriend’s dreams. She made the process simple yet exciting. The Herzog team held onto the ring for me for a few months until I planned the perfect proposal. It went off without a hitch and the ring took my new fiancé, all our family and all our friends by surprise. To say they were impressed is an understatement. We received endless compliments on the ring. Over the next year, we planned our wedding and Mandy was right there with us. She assisted us not only with our wedding bands, but also with gifts for our families, bridal party and new watches. I didn’t realize just how much you need a trusted jeweler and rep in your corner, but it made all the difference. We are so thankful to Herzog and Mandy. Trust me when I say, you need this team in your corner, especially if you’re planning a wedding. On November 25th, 2022, I married the love of my life, and it all started with a trip to a jewelry store. I’m so glad we picked the best in town!"
