Jacob and Katie's Aysmmetric Oval

The Bespoke Journey

A Cluster Halo As Unique As Their Love

Using an heirloom diamond, Jacob surprised Katie with a truly one of a kind engagement ring. The secret? Drawing inspiration from two very different rings.

Phase 01

Ideation & Inspiration

When Jacob came in to Herzog to browse rings, he truly came to browse. He knew he wanted Yellow Gold and he knew he wanted to use an heirloom oval center stone for his partner, Katie, but that was about all! He worked with Taylor, looking at various ring styles. He didn't love any of the classics- the solitaire, the three stone, and a traditional halo were all pretty quickly ruled out.

One ring in the case caught Jacob's eye: a starburst halo. Thinking quickly, Taylor remembered there had been another ring that had recently come in and hadn't been checked into inventory yet that had a very unique halo, and wasn't even a traditional engagement ring. After discussing how much he liked how different the starburst was from other rings they had looked at, she knew she had to at least show it to him. The ring was a one of a kind scatter halo ring set with a pear ruby. Jacob was inspired!

Phase 02

Technical Engineering

Jacob fell in love with the asymmetry and unique scatter of the ring. There were components of the starburst ring he liked, like the simple band and basket setting, plus his own touches he wanted to include, like using his center stone. After taking down some notes about Jacob's dream ring, Taylor began working with our custom jeweler to work out the perfect ring and get a CAD rendering for Jacob to see.

DID YOU KNOW? Sometimes putting a CAD together reveals potential trouble spots to the jeweler before the ring is made. Reviewing CADs closely helps us create the best quality ring possible for our customers.

The first version of the CAD was a great start, but decidedly needed some tweaking. From a wearability standpoint, Taylor was concerned that some of the jagged points may snag easily, and Jacob didn't love the visual gaps they created. By rearranging the stone clusters slightly, we were able to maintain the scattered asymmetry, but create a visually uniform ring to be enjoyed for years to come.

Phase 03

The Finished Product

Once the CAD is approved, a wax is created and metal is cast. Stones are selected and set by hand. Finishing touches are applied and a high polish finish added. Then the ring is ready to present!
